What is Orofacial Myology?
Orofacial myology or OM refers to the functions and movements of facial muscles including the tongue, lips, and jaw, and how they contribute to functions such as speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing. Oro-facial myofunctional therapy is a type of treatment focused on correcting improper muscle function in the mouth and face.
An Oro-facial myologist is a therapist specifically trained in the assessment and treatment of facial musculature, particularly those involved in oral posture, eating, speech development, swallowing, and breathing. Orofacial myologists include Dentists, Orthodontists, bodyworkers (i.e. Chiropractors, Osteopaths) and Speech Pathologists.
A speech pathologist can help with oro-facial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) by assessing and treating abnormalities in the muscles and functions of the face and mouth that can affect oral posture, speech development, chewing, swallowing, and breathing. Treatment may include exercises to strengthen or retrain the muscles, behaviour modification techniques, and the use of specialised oral appliances. The speech pathologist may also work with other healthcare professionals, such as dentists, orthodontists, Chiropractors or Osteopaths to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
Oro-facial myofunctional therapy should only be performed by a trained professional. At Peninsula Plus, we have several Speech Pathologists trained in oro-facial myofuction. Please give our customer service team a call to find out more.
